| 121.) Through Effort, Humans Can Transform [or Transcend] their lower nature—the following is from a parable on how human beings are not living up to their divine nature, but in their actions, have become worse than animals—from Sri Sathya Sai Baba: a.) “There is one specialty in human beings that is unique, in which they cannot be compared with the animals. Animals may inherit a streak of cruelty. Once they have acquired that they cannot change it. A tiger, however hungry he may be, will not eat rice and curry. He only aspires to have mutton. … However much he may try to change his habits, he will not succeed. b.) “On the other hand, if sufficient efforts are made by humans, they can transform their cruel nature and any of their bad habits. The most important difference between humans and animals is that humans, with effort, can bring about a complete transformation in themselves, whereas animals will not be able to accomplish that. These special capacities and skills for transforming themselves are only available to human beings. …” c.) “Human beings have been collectively called mankind, using the generic term m-a-n. The same is given in Sanskrit as manava. […] Where: 'M' stands for 'Maya removed', 'A' stands for 'Atma realized', 'N' stands for 'Nirvana attained'. Attaining Nirvana means that man becomes one with joy and bliss. “So, a true human being is one who has removed the ignorance of Maya, who has had a vision of the Atma and who has become merged in the supreme state of bliss.” |
| (i) To think that: one can just "try harder" in the lower world – would be a serious error. (ii) More likely than not, those who end up in the lower world will fail again, and if that happens, perish utterly! ▼▼▼ 120.) What Is Samsara? : “There arises a memory of pleasure in the mind. Then the mind thinks of objects. Maya has her powerful seat in the imagination. There comes attachment. The mind plans and schemes. You are swayed by the passions. You exert yourself physically to possess those objects and enjoy them. In your efforts, you favor some and disfavor others … “You will have to enjoy [or suffer] the fruits of your virtuous and vicious actions. Through this six-spoked wheel of … virtue and vice, pleasure and pain, this Samsaric wheel of birth and death moves on without stopping from [beginningless time].” “Think of the miseries of this earthly life, its cares, worries, anxieties, hunger, thirst, sins, temptations, passion, fighting, fears, vanity, disease, death, old age, sorrow, grief, tribulation, loss, failures, disappointments, hostility, scorpion stings, mosquito bites, etc. […] Remember constantly the pains of various kinds pertaining to this mundane existence.” “The enemy of Atman [or Atma] is the impure mind, which is replete with excessive delusion and a host of thoughts. This mischievous and powerful imp of lower mind [lower manas] is the generator of all pains and all fears and the destroyer of all noble, spiritual wealth. …” ( Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, Mind—Its Mysteries And Control (1998) ) |
